Obvious advantages and great potential
 
Micro LED is called micro LED display, and its structure is miniature LED array, that is, the LED structure is designed to be thin-film, miniaturized and arrayed, so that its volume is about 1% of the current mainstream led size. Each pixel can be located and independently driven to emit light, reducing the distance between pixels from the original millimeter level to the micron level.
 
Because it inherits the characteristics of LED, the advantages of micro led include low power consumption, high brightness, ultra-high resolution and color saturation, fast reaction speed, super power saving, long life and high efficiency. Its power consumption is about 10% of LCD and 50% of OLED. Compared with OLED which is also self luminous display, the brightness is 30 times higher, and the resolution can reach 1500 PPI, which is more than five times of OLED. In addition, good material stability and shadowless image imprinting are also advantages.
 
As micro LED is still in the early stage of development, it is difficult to estimate the market scale it can create. However, if the scale of existing LCD components is replaced by backlight module, liquid crystal, polarizing plate, etc., the future potential market scale of micro LED can reach about US $30-40 billion.
 
In addition, Li Yunli, chairman of hitech technology, who entered the field of micro led earlier in Taiwan, also said that in the past year, engineers from major display technology manufacturers in Japan and South Korea often came to hitech's Tainan headquarters to exchange experience, which shows that micro LED has won high attention from some manufacturers. At the same time, Yuchuang also pointed out that from the perspective of application products, it is expected to start mass production of micro led large-scale displays and wearable devices in the second half of 2017. Currently, customers in Asia, Europe and the United States are involved. As for VR products, there is a chance to enter mass production in the first half of 2018. It is precisely seeing the commercial value and market prospect of micro LED that many giants in the industry, such as apple, Sony and other international manufacturers, have begun to actively layout and strive to participate in the development of micro led, trying to occupy a favorable position in the development wave of next generation display technology by promoting the commercialization process of micro led.
 
Take apple as an example. Apple acquired luxvue technology, a micro LED display technology company, as early as 2014. It is reported that luxvue technology owns a number of patents in micro LED technology. At present, apple is stepping up its efforts to introduce related technologies into smart watches.
 
When it comes to the commercialization of micro led, we have to mention Sony, a big international manufacturer. In the 2017 CES consumer electronics show in the United States at the beginning of this year, Sony's newly launched Crystal LED integrated structure (clidis) large display attracted much attention, highlighting that micro LED is about to open a new battlefield in the commercial display market. At the same time, Sony also announced that it will introduce mass production in 2017. In fact, Sony launched the Crystal LED display technology as early as 2012, using 6.22 million micro led particles to be introduced into 55 inch TV. In 2016, Sony named the technology clidis, and established the strategy of using micro led to specialize in large-size display market.
 
Micro LED will become the trend of the next generation display technology. Recently, according to foreign media reports, Samsung may offer us $150 million to acquire micro led factory and innovative technology. At present, Yuchuang has a certain degree of market leading position in R & D, and will introduce mass production at the end of the year. Although Li Yunli, chairman of hitech technology, called the acquisition a "beautiful misunderstanding", it can still be seen that Samsung has considerable interest in micro LED technology.
 
In addition, Taiwan manufacturers are also actively investing in micro LED technology to break through the mass production threshold. At present, the R & D layout of micro LED is quite active. It not only actively develops in-house, but also cooperates with the manual Research Institute on micro LED technology. Commercial and wearable fields are expected to take the lead in mass production
 
LED industry insiders believe that 2017 will be the key year for micro LED technology to enter mass production. According to the prediction of yole development, a market research company, micro LED will initially be successfully applied to smart watches and accelerate the maturity of the technology and supply chain, so that micro LED will then develop into a competitive technology of OLED in the application fields of high-end TV, tablet computer and notebook. Although micro LED will not bring significant subversive power to these applications, it still has the best advantages of OLED and LCD.
 
From the current application situation of apple, although it is difficult for the micro led to be applied on the large screen iPhone soon, it may take several years of development work. In contrast, small screen Apple watch (Series 3) is more likely to use this technology in advance.
 
Ledinside also said that apple and Sony have actively deployed micro LEDs in the smallest watch and the largest large display respectively, but it is expected that more manufacturers will take virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) as the layout direction in the future. As the application of micro LED display in smart watch needs to face the price competition of traditional display, VR / AR is a more imaginative market. Therefore, apple, oculus, ostendo and others have successively arranged the VR / AR field of micro led.
 
In addition to VR / AR, another potential market for micro LED is smart phones. Ledinside said that in terms of the development of the smartphone market, high-end models usually sell with the latest display technology that can display high-quality images. Once the micro LED technology is commercialized on the smartphone, it is estimated that it will penetrate into the high-end smartphone market faster.
 
In addition, in the commercial field of large screen, micro LED will also usher in business opportunities. Although the introduction of OLED panel into mobile phone screen has become the mainstream trend, micro LED is still difficult to challenge OLED panel in terms of picture quality and pixel specification. However, due to the high acceptance of cost and price for large-size display panel, and it is easier to meet the pixel specification requirements, it is also expected to become the fastest growing application field of micro led.
 
At present, there are still cost and technology bottlenecks in the large-scale application of micro led. However, Li Yunli, chairman of hitech technology, also said, "micro LED can definitely be overcome in technology, but whether or how soon it can become the mainstream application is determined by the whole ecosystem. If big brands such as apple, Samsung and Sony push micro led, the cost will soon be reduced to a commercial range. "
